Description
Describe your artwork and the inspiration behind it.
This is a hand-painted acrylic on canvas. Using the iconic image of a Superman stripping away his shirt and tie to reveal his superhero costume, I've addressed the notion of new masculinity by substituting a baby carrier for the classic Superman "S". In doing so I use a combination of, humor, iconology, parody, association and dichotomy, fused and juxtaposed to create the image of the "new man."
What does modern masculinity mean to you?
Modern masculinity is redefining what it means to “be a man”. No more standards and specific roles. The modern man is one that is free to explore and, personally, grow in the world around them and within themselves.
What do you think are the requirements to be a "modern man"?
The modern man has tolerance, understanding and flexibility toward others and within himself.
What is modern masculinity in your country - and how do you feel about it?
I think American men display less of the traits associated with the modern man then their European counterparts. While American men have come a long way in the past few decades we still display many of the stereotypical behaviors associated with prior generations. We are slow to let go of old and outdated behaviors. That said, in my lifetime I have seen the American man grow in leaps and bounds. And I think we are well on our way to finding a balance between traditional masculinity and the more "evolved" masculine behaviors of our European counterparts.
